The sciatic nerve block procedure requires the use of anesthesia or an anesthetic/steroid medication mixture to treat the sciatic nerve. The injection serves to block the flow of pain signals subsequent to surgery done on the knee, leg, foot, or ankle; or to help alleviate pain experienced from chronic conditions in the lower extremities.
Before the procedure can begin, the patient lies face down on the table, exposing the buttocks. With the assistance of an ultrasound probe, the entry point from which the needle is to be inserted is determined. Once the entry point has been ascertained, a local anesthetic is applied to the area, numbing it. After that, a needle is carefully inserted into the tissue that has already been numbed and carefully inserted all the way down towards the sciatic nerve. To help ensure that the needle is in the correct spot, an ultrasound is used to confirm the needle’s location. Once it is determined that the needle is placed correctly, either the anesthetic or anesthetic/steroid mixture is applied via the needle. The medication drenches the sciatic nerve’s main trunk. This results in either the pain being temporarily blocked in the leg or the patient experiencing reduced pain levels and inflammation.
Following the completion of the injection, the needle is removed and a bandage is applied to the site where the injection took place. As for the duration of the medication injected, it will vary depending on the type of medication that was administered during the procedure and what the goal of the procedure is. The goal of the procedure will vary on the patient’s condition which is on a case-by-case basis.
